Vascular Neurology Fellowship

NYU Langone’s Department of Neurology offers a one-year Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)–accredited fellowship in vascular neurology. There are four clinical fellows each year. Our program exposes you to a variety of inpatient, outpatient, and critical care environments with a uniquely diverse patient population. You work closely with NYU Langone’s interventional neuroradiology team, which is among the best and largest in the country, with four full-time faculty members whose training backgrounds include diagnostic radiology, neurology, and neurosurgery.

In addition to receiving intensive training in the inpatient and outpatient management of a wide variety of cerebrovascular diseases, fellows gain knowledge and experience across various areas of expertise:

  • exposure to critical care medicine, treating neurosurgical patients with cerebrovascular disease and critically ill stroke patients through our dedicated neurointensive care unit (neuro-ICU) at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, NYC Health + Hospital/Bellevue, and NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn
  • neurosonology, including the performance and interpretation of transcranial and carotid Doppler ultrasonography
  • neuroradiology, including using the most up-to-date neuroimaging techniques to make diagnoses and management decisions for patients with acute neurologic disorders
  • world-class training in neurorehabilitation through our close collaboration with NYU Langone’s Rusk Rehabilitation

Fellows are also involved in screening candidates for our multiple clinic trials, and work with our faculty on clinical and quality improvement projects within stroke research. Our prior fellows have presented their work at SVIN, AAN and ISC.

Vascular Neurology Fellows

Our fellows hail from diverse backgrounds and are highly involved in patient care. Meet our current fellows.

Sample Block Schedule

The year is outlined below:

  • inpatient service (Tisch Hospital/Kimmel Pavilion, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn): 6 months
  • neuro-ICU: 1 month
  • neuroradiology (diagnostic, interventional): 1 month
  • neurosonology: ½ month
  • elective: 2 months
  • vacation: 1 month

Outpatient Clinical Experience

Fellows serve as primary providers in the longitudinal stroke fellows’ clinic which is held weekly at the Bellevue Hospital outpatient clinic. Fellows also join faculty in the Faculty Group Practice clinic during elective time.

Didactics

Every Friday morning, fellows attend fellow-led conferences designed to advance fellows’ skills in neuroimaging, critical analysis of the literature, and teaching. Fellows also participate in multidisciplinary stroke conferences with experts in fields outside of vascular neurology, weekly preventive cardiology conferences, and weekly departmental Grand Rounds.

Elective Time

The fellowship includes built-in elective time to pursue interventional neuroradiology training, participation in basic research, clinical research, or a combination of the two; medical education; patient safety and quality projects; or other areas of personal and professional interest.

Research for Vascular Neurology Fellows

While the fellowship is primarily clinical, you are strongly supported in your own basic science projects, clinical research, or a combination of the two.

We are passionate about the rapidly evolving field of vascular neurology and are committed to providing you with the most comprehensive and up-to-date medical education and training. If you share our excitement about the field of academic vascular neurology, we strongly encourage you to apply.

To be eligible for the vascular neurology fellowship, you must have successfully completed three years of an ACGME-approved neurology residency training program in the United States. Requirements for NYU Langone house staff must also be met in full.

Although not required at the time of application, an active New York State medical license is mandatory before starting the fellowship.
