Pediatric Sleep Disorders Education & Research

Experts at the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center—Sleep Center train future sleep medicine specialists and conduct research into pediatric sleep disorders. Through the Pediatric Sleep Disorders Program, part of Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, we provide specialized treatment for sleep disorders in infants, children, and teenagers.

Our pediatric neurologists are specialists in sleep disorders. We help diagnose and manage a variety of sleep conditions, including obstructive sleep apnea, behavioral insomnia in infancy and childhood, parasomnias, excessive daytime sleepiness, narcolepsy, and restless leg syndrome.

We also collaborate with craniofacial specialists and experts in pediatric otolaryngology, dentistry, pulmonology, allergy, and orthodontics. This is a large focus of patient care because craniofacial abnormalities, such as cleft palate, can be associated with sleep disorders in children.

Our facility has six patient testing rooms and offers the latest technology for diagnosing sleep disorders in children, as well as in adults. Our sleep lab is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), meaning that we meet and often exceed the highest patient care standards in the field of sleep medicine.

Pediatric Sleep Disorders Education

We help train residents and fellows in evidence-based sleep medicine and are committed to preparing physicians for careers in sleep medicine. Neurology residents gain clinical experience by rotating through our group, seeing patients, and learning how to properly diagnose and treat pediatric-specific sleep disorders. Residents also attend our sleep medicine lecture series, which presents the latest information on advances in the field.

Fellows in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine also rotate with us, learning the intricacies of pediatric sleep medicine. Trainees have the opportunity to work with our cognitive behavioral therapy specialist to learn more about using this type of therapy to treat insomnia.

We also offer rotations for medical students.

Pediatric Sleep Disorders Research

Our research interests include sleep and neurodevelopment, the effect of seizures and epilepsy on sleep, and differentiating between a sleep disorder and a seizure.
